Maintenance
Like any machine, a car needs regular maintenance to perform properly. Follow your manufacturer’s instructions regarding oil changes, fluid flushes and the like. If you don’t have your vehicle serviced at the dealer, make sure your mechanic is using the proper oil, fluids, etc. for your vehicle. Many vehicles now have special requirements for coolant, transmission fluid, oil, and power steering fluid. Most of these cannot be substituted or inter-mixed with different brands. Save all receipts from your mechanic. You may need proof of maintenance if you have a warranty claim.Oil changes are not only important for the life of your engine; they also present an opportunity for someone to inspect the undercarriage of your vehicle. This is helpful is spotting small problems before they become major problems, or allowing you to plan and budget for future needed repairs. With fuel economy being on everyone’s mind these days, make sure your vehicle is squeezing every mile from a gallon of fuel by keeping your tires properly inflated and addressing any check engine lights quickly. These can signal that your vehicle is not performing at its peak, which also means it is wasting fuel. Have your vehicle “tuned up” according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. Dirty air and/or fuel filters, worn spark plugs, improperly inflated tires, etc can greatly affect fuel economy, safety, and vehicle performance. |
